Boston lock & key help

Residential locksmith in Boston, MA

Moving in, missing keys or a troublesome home lock? Discuss residential lock and key help for Boston houses, apartments and shared buildings.

Start with the door you use

A sticking front-door lock and a bedroom lock that will not latch are not the same job. Tell us where the door is, what the key or handle does, and whether the problem happens every time. A clear description helps separate a key issue from hardware or door-fit trouble.

For an apartment, make clear whether you mean your unit door or an entrance used by other residents. Shared access, building keys and management arrangements can affect which changes are suitable.

A new home does not always need all-new locks

If you have moved or no longer know who has copies of a key, ask whether the existing locks can be rekeyed. Rekeying changes which key works in suitable hardware. It does not repair worn parts or make unrelated locks automatically compatible.

If the hardware is damaged or no longer suits the door, replacement may be worth discussing instead. Describe the current setup and the change you want before buying new hardware.

Plan a change around the people who use the entrance

For a rental or managed property, coordinate with the person who can approve the work. Mention any shared key arrangement, other doors that use the same key and how many people need access afterwards.

A photo of the door face, edge and existing hardware can help explain the request if requested during the call. Keep private key codes and personal documents out of public messages.

Worth knowing.

Should I change the locks when I move in?

Discuss who may still have keys and whether the existing hardware is suitable. Rekeying may change key access without replacing a usable lock; damaged or unsuitable hardware needs a different assessment.

Can I use a lock I already bought?

Ask before arranging installation. Door thickness, existing openings, handing and other hardware affect compatibility, so a purchased lock is not automatically a fit.
